An article was published by GQ Magazine about some of the biggest trends in music. To help with the article, Tony Bennett, A-Trak, and several other artists were asked to weigh in. There have been a number of breakout acts in recent months, and it shows that people are looking for something new.
A-Trak has mentioned that he would like to eliminate formulas so that there was no more copying of music. Everyone would have to be creative and come up with their own music. This is in light of the recent debate over taking from other artists. Some artists hold tight to the music they have produced and don’t like for others to copy it. Other artists encourage new artists to borrow formulas and even a few of the same clips.
Artists that have recently been accused of ripping off another artist include Robin Thicke, Coldplay, and Lady Gaga.
French Montana has talked about a trend as many artists go back to the early hip hop sounds. The mood is slowly going to shift from the Deep South back up to New York to get the raw mood of the early 1990s hip hop.
When Tony Bennett was asked about the trend, he commented more about how the cream will always rise to the top and how people ultimately go for good music. He believes that the recipe for success is melody and lyrics that communicate something to the masses. Those are the ones that remain classics within a genre.
Ryan Hemsworth, a DJ and producer, weighed in and said one of the biggest trends has to do with production more than anything else. There’s a Japanese influence that’s been seen in a number of works, and this is only going to continue in the next few years. It has been infiltrating the sound throughout the United States and Europe.
Many of the artists, DJs, and producers who were interviewed for the GQ article had the same things to say about music. The talented writers and singers are always going to prevail. There will be more of a focus on organic and musical sounds because people are getting tired of hearing all of the electronics.
With these trends emerging, it is more important than ever to attend a music school. If you want to be successful in today’s age within the music industry, you have to know what you’re doing. You have to develop a respect for the different genres and learn how the different sounds are being produced. After that, you can then determine how to create your own music so that you walk the line between honoring the sounds of previous artists without blatantly ripping them off.
Understanding music trends is a must if you want to keep up with the popular music scene. You want your music to be a trendsetter and not a follower of outdated sounds.
